Sponsored by the Ministry of Construction, China Seismological Bureau, National Natural Science Foundation and American National Science Foundation, the 3th International Conference on Earthquake Engineering was held in NJUT, and was co-sponsored by China Academy of Building Research Institute, Research Institute of Engineering Mechanics of China Seismological Bureau and NJUT. More than 40 experts from American National Science Foundation, over 60 representatives from Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong, famous Chinese experts on earthquake engineering, and over 200 experts from Harbin Institute of Technology, Tongji University and Southeast University attended the conference.

Dr. JOSEPH PENZIEN, an academician of the American Academy of Sciences and a world-renowned expert in earthquake engineering, and Xie Lili, an academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering made keynote reports, and expounded the latest researches and development trends of earthquake engineering. NJUT had achieved great success in this field and enjoyed certain reputation. Prof. Xie Lili rated highly NJUT's achievements and its far-sight to co-sponsor the conference.
