Overview

The College of Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Engineering of Nanjing Tech University is one of the birthplaces of Chinas biochemical engineering discipline. In the past 40 years of development, the college has adhered to the founder Ouyang Pingkais academic concept of "loyalty, honesty, precision, and reality". It has always resonated with the major needs of the country, people's life and health, and biomedical economic industries. It has always been in the same direction with the development of China's advanced biological and chemical manufacturing, and has improved the multi-disciplinary cross-strategic layout of "strengthening industry, strengthening science, invigorating medicine, and revitalizing agriculture". It has made outstanding contributions to the development of the country and society.

Departments & Institutions

The college is the main supporting unit of national platforms such as the National Biochemical Engineering Technology Research Center, the State Key Laboratory of Materials Chemical Engineering, and the National Advanced Biological and Chemical Manufacturing Collaborative Innovation Center. As the first, second and third phases of the construction project of advantageous disciplines in Jiangsu universities, it adheres to the in-depth expansion of multidisciplinary cross-direction. The existing doctoral programs of first-level disciplines of bioengineering (the only one in Jiangsu Province), master's programs of first-level disciplines of biology and master's programs of degree in biology and medicine, and doctoral programs of first-level disciplines of chemical engineering and technology (national key disciplines) and master's programs of degree in materials and chemical engineering are jointly built. The discipline of biology and biochemistry, the disciplines of chemistry, material science, engineering, environmental science and ecology, which participated in the construction, all ranked among the top 1% of the world in ESI, and the disciplines of chemistry and material science both entered the top 1of the world in ESI.

Standing at the height of national development strategy, the college grasps the development trend of the world's bio-manufacturing industry, makes precise efforts in the research and development of common technologies and major products in the bio-manufacturing industry, and highlights its unique advantages in the research fields of green bio-manufacturing and synthetic biology. Since the 12th Five-Year Plan, it has undertaken more than 1200 projects at all levels, with an average annual scientific research fund of more than 120 million yuan, and won 7 national science and technology awards. The construction of the "Applied Basic Research - Common Technology Development - Achievement Industry Transformation" complete innovation chain plays an important role in leading "bio+" to promote the upgrading of traditional industries, and forward-looking development of green "carbon neutrality" and "big health" biomedical industries.

The college adheres to the new development pattern of "domestic and international double cycle". In recent years, it has established new R&D institutions such as the Industrial Biotechnology Institute of Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute and Nanjing Advanced Biomaterials and Process Equipment Research Institute, has carried out high-quality cooperation with central enterprises such as Sinopec, PetroChina and COFCO Group, and has incubated more than 30 technology-based enterprises. It has also actively promoted the pace of internationalization. It has established academic exchanges and cooperation in personnel training with universities and research institutes in the United States, Germany, The United Kingdom, Ireland, Singapore, The Netherlands, Japan, Canada, South Korea, Austria to name a few. It has built an international joint research center for green chemistry with the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, built a China-Germany joint laboratory for international cooperation in the biological refining of waste carbon resources, and hosted several international high-level academic events such as the International Conference on Advanced Bio-manufacturing (ICAB) and the International Synthetic Biology Forum.

Education Programs

The college carries the important task of cultivating high-level talents of national advanced bio-manufacturing technology. It adheres to the integration and innovation of "science, industry, innovation and education", and has a strong academic highland cultural atmosphere. It has become one of the most influential and competitive higher education bases for the cultivation of high-end talents in the field of bio-manufacturing in China. The college has two national first-class undergraduate majors in bioengineering and pharmaceutical engineering. They are all selected for theWashington Accordengineering education professional certification, as well as a series of provincial and ministerial teaching resources and teaching achievement awards such as national teaching teams and national first-class courses. The institute cultivates more than 40 doctoral students, more than 300 master's students and more than 600 undergraduates every year, and has a solid alumni enterprise and a 'circle of friends' for industry-university-research cooperation. Previous graduates have shown excellent talent competitiveness and academic development potential, and are deeply recognized and welcomed by employers such as well-known enterprises and universities at home and abroad. The college has comprehensively built a "strategic scientist + team" talent model, and has the most powerful teaching staff complement in the field of biological manufacturing in China. Ying Hanjie, Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, is a professor, doctoral supervisor, national excellent teacher, national excellent scientific and technological worker, winner of the National Outstanding Youth Fund, leader of the innovation team of the Ministry of Education, special professor of Yangtze River scholars, and director of the National Biochemical Engineering Technology Research Center. He is committed to biological process enhancement and process reconstruction, biomass resource utilization, and promoting the integration of biotechnology and products with other disciplines. He presided over more than 40 scientific research projects such as major projects and key projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has won 6 science and technology awards at the provincial and ministerial levels and above, such as the second prize of the national technology invention award. More than 180 SCI papers were published and more than 180 invention patents were authorized.

Guo Kai, Vice President of Nanjing Tech University, is a professor, doctoral supervisor, Professor of Yangtze River Scholars of the Ministry of Education, National 'Ten Thousand Talents Plan' Leading Talents in Scientific and Technological Innovation, and Winner of the National Natural Science Foundation of China Excellent Youth Fund. Doctorate in Chemistry, University of Sheffield, UK. He is committed to the research of green chemical industry and biomass chemical industry, systematically carries out the engineering application and equipment development of micro-flow field technology, and cooperates with Sinopec and other enterprises to realize the industrialization of bio-based polyurethane, bio-based non-toxic plasticizer and multiple pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals. He presided over more than 50 scientific research projects, such as the National Key R&D Program and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has won four provincial and ministerial science and technology awards such as the second prize of national technology invention award. More than 180 SCI papers were published, and more than 70 invention patents were authorized.

Jiang Min, professor, doctoral supervisor, national 'Ten thousand people plan' science and technology innovation leader, Ministry of Education 'New century outstanding talent support plan' candidate. He has carried out post-doctoral research at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology. He is committed to using low-grade carbon resources instead of fossil resources to prepare chemicals, establishing a leading synthetic biology manufacturing team in China, cooperating with Sinopec, COFCO and BASF to realize the industrial production of C4 organic acids and other products. As the head of China-Europe MIX-UP project, the waste plastic biorefinery system was reported by Nature journal. He presided over more than 30 scientific research projects, such as the National Key R&D Program, the International Cooperation and Exchange Project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and so on. He has won four provincial and ministerial science and technology awards such as the second prize of the Ministry of Education's Technology Invention Award. More than 80 SCI papers were published and more than 80 invention patents were authorized.

Chen Kequan, Professor, Ph.D. Supervisor, Selected Professor of Young Changjiang Scholar. He has carried out postdoctoral research at Akita Prefectural University in Japan. It is mainly engaged in the research work in the field of biocatalytic engineering. Through the technical integration of enzyme engineering, an efficient biocatalytic engineering system has been constructed, and a lot of research work has been carried out in the biosynthesis of amino acids and their derivatives, organic acids, bio-based nylon materials, and energetic materials. He presided over more than 20 scientific research projects such as national key research and development plan projects. He has won three provincial and ministerial science and technology awards such as the second prize of the Ministry of Education 's Technology Invention Award. More than 40 SCI papers were published and more than 20 invention patents were authorized.

Ji Xiaojun, Professor, doctoral supervisor, winner of the National Excellent Youth Fund, winner of the Newton Advanced Fellowships of the Royal Society, and deputy editor of Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology and Frontiers in Microbiology. He has long been committed to the study of synthetic biology to transform microorganisms into pharmaceutical chemicals. From 2016 to 2017, he has been engaged in visiting research in the Laboratory of Systems and Synthetic Biology led by Professor Jens Nielsen, Academician of the American Academy of Sciences and Engineering. He presided over more than 20 scientific research projects such as the national key research and development plan, and was awarded the Young Teacher Award of Huo Yingdong Education Foundation and the Hou Debang Chemical Technology Youth Award, and published more than 150 SCI papers.

Chen Yong, researcher, doctoral tutor, won the national 'million talent project', the state has outstanding contributions to young and middle-aged experts, Jiangsu Province Youth Science and Technology Award, Jiangsu Province Outstanding Youth Fund and other talent titles, Deputy Secretary-General of Jiangsu Provincial Biotechnology Association, Executive Deputy Director of the National Biochemical Engineering Technology Research Center, Executive Deputy Director of the Industrial Biotechnology Research Institute of Jiangsu Industrial Technology Research Institute. He has long been committed to the research and industrial application of the strengthening mechanism of biological and pharmaceutical manufacturing process, and has undertaken national key research and development projects and other national projects. He has published more than 50 papers in high-level SCI journals, authorized more than 60 patents, including 9 PCT patents, and won many national and provincial science and technology awards, including the second national technology invention award.

Zhu Chenjie, professor, doctoral supervisor, was elected to the National Youth Talent Support Program, the "Youth Talent Project" of the China Association for Science and Technology, the Outstanding Youth Fund of Jiangsu Province, and the Deputy Director of the National Biochemical Engineering Technology Research Center. Main research directions: biorefinery and cofactor engineering. More than 80 academic papers were published, 2 academic monographs were compiled, and 3 national standards were formulated. It has been authorized 4 international invention patents and more than 70 Chinese invention patents. He won the Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Youth Award, the Second Prize for Technological Invention of the Ministry of Education, the First Prize for Technological Invention of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, and the China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Award.

Xie Jingjing, Professor, Ph.D. Supervisor, Deputy Dean of Graduate School of Nanjing University of Technology, Executive Director of the New Technology Committee of Traditional Chinese Medicine of China Association of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Taking 'efficient biocatalyst' as the core technology, a series of applied basic research projects were carried out around the key scientific problems of 'coupling and adaptation mechanism of non-spontaneous reaction system and biocatalytic conversion system in resource utilization'. As the project leader, she presided over more than 20 national, provincial and ministerial-level and enterprise-commissioned projects, such as multiple national key R&D projects, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and so on. She published more than 100 SCI papers in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, Bioresources Technology and other journals. She has won the Outstanding Science Program of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the "China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Award" of the China Industry-University-Research Cooperation Promotion Association.
