Research Areas and Unique Advantages
Oriented with innovation convergence, we have established five advantageous academic directions, including 1) biopharmaceutical and biochemical pharmacy; 2) pharmacology and toxicology; 3) design and synthesis of new chemical drugs; 4) pharmaceutical preparation and biomaterials, and 5) pharmaceutical analysis. Nourished by superior resources of National Biochemical Engineering Center and National 2011 Collaborative Innovation Center, our school has built several high-level technical platforms, for example the Drug Safety Evaluation Center of Jiangsu Province. We have formed characteristic advantages in the fields of design, modification and expression of functional protein; biosynthesis of natural products; green synthesis technology of API; pharmacokinetic study of new drugs for male reproductive system and tumors; sustained & controlled release and pulse self-regulated release system; modern pharmaceutical analysis, new drug safety evaluation, etc.
Departments & Institutions
Founded in 2008, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Nanjing Tech University covers three training levels including undergraduate, master and doctoral education, with two undergraduate majors, pharmaceutics and pharmacy. The first-level discipline master's program of pharmacy includes pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacy, pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical analysis, microbiology and biochemical pharmacy, pharmacology, etc., and the doctoral program includes pharmaceutical engineering and biochemical engineering (biochemical drug direction). There are more than 700 undergraduate students (including about 40 international students) and more than 150 doctoral and master students.
Over the past decade, the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences has evolved in its approach to educating pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists for pharmaceutical companies and research institutes. Based in Jiangsu, a strong pharmaceutical province, and focusing on the major needs of Jiangsu’s pharmaceutical industry and enterprises, currently, many research centers have been established including the National Biochemical Engineering Technology Research Center (for biochemical drugs), Jiangsu Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Center, Jiangsu Provincial Drug Safety Evaluation Center (which has been certified by the national GLP certification), and Jiangsu Provincial New Drug Preparation Research and Engineering Technology Service Center. We have extensive cooperative relations with leading pharmaceutical companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Hengrui, and Simcere, which provide an excellent teaching and research base for academic training.
Education Programs
1. Pharmaceutics
The program is designed to train students to be leaders in the profession of pharmacy and to provide them with the tools to effectively practice in senior research and teaching positions in the field of innovative pharmaceutical research, biotechnology research, pharmaceutical assessment, design, production and management of new drug in research institutions, universities and enterprises. The research in this direction focuses on new nano-drugs based on multi-modal intelligent tumor therapy; pharmacokinetic mathematical model of sustained and controlled release preparations and evaluation technology of traditional Chinese medicine multi-component drug delivery system; nano-biomaterials such as nano-contrast agents for surgical navigation.
2. Pharmaceutical chemistry
The direction relies on the national first-level key disciplines of chemical engineering and technology, focusing on new target-oriented new drug discovery and precision therapy, organic integration of small molecule innovative drug synthesis, green drug synthesis and quality control technology and microfluidic field synthesis technology, etc.
3. Pharmacology
This direction focuses on the research of metabolomics based on translational medicine; establish a comprehensive pharmacological evaluation system to screen and evaluate the antitumor activity of innovative compounds synthesized by total chemical synthesis and innovative drug delivery materials; using metabolomics to study the pathological mechanism of major diseases.
4. Microbiology and biotechnology pharmacy
It is an interdisciplinary based on the National Biochemical Engineering Technology Research Center, Jiangsu Industrial Biotechnology Innovation and and Translation Center. The direction focuses on the production of biomedical products such as various pharmaceutical intermediates, amino acids, organic acids, unsaturated fatty acids and polyamino acids developed through microbial fermentation and enzyme engineering methods.
5.Natural pharmaceutical chemistry
The aim of this direction is to establish unique natural products and their modified high-efficiency biosynthesis and semi-synthesis new methods and technology platforms; in the directional biosynthesis of new natural products and their derivatives; carrying out research on quality standards for natural medicines; the molecular mechanism of the action of natural pharmaceutical active substances.
6. Pharmaceutical Analysis and Separation Engineering
Relying on the key laboratory of separation (membrane) materials, it has formed a distinctive feature in the high-efficiency and energy-saving complete sets of separation equipment and technology; in the green manufacturing technology of high-end membrane materials and drugs; in the separation and crystallization of biological products.
Eminent Professors
He Huang, professor and doctoral supervisor, winner of the National Natural Science Foundation of China Outstanding Youth Fund, current Dean of the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Nanjing Tech University, is the director of Jiangsu Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Center, director of Sinopec Nanjing Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Center, and National Youth Federation Committee member, deputy secretary-general of Chinese Society of Bioengineering, deputy secretary-general of Jiangsu Society of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, and a member of the Jiangsu Youth Federation. He has won 2 second prizes of the National Technology Invention Award, 1 first prize of the Ministry of Education Technology Invention Award, and 3 first prizes of the China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation Technology Invention Award, along with a number of other awards. His research work is mainly in the field of advanced biological manufacturing of bio-based chemicals. More than 20 undergraduates have won full scholarships to pursue master's or doctorate degrees in Washington University, Ohio State University, Michigan State University and other well-known universities. Many outstanding graduates have been employed by well-known domestic enterprises and institutions such as Sinopec, CNPC, CNOOC, Jiangsu University, Nanchang University and so on.
Xueming Li, professor and doctoral supervisor, is the executive director of Nanjing Pharmaceutical Association and the vice chairman of the Pharmaceutical Committee of Jiangsu Pharmaceutical Association. He received his PhD degree from China Pharmaceutical University and studied as a visiting scholar in the University of Michigan. The research of his group focuses on sustained and controlled release preparations, drug delivery systems and biomaterials. In recent years, he has taken charge of a number of national projects such as those of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and Jiangsu Province. He has published more than 100 academic papers and obtained 11 invention patents. He actively promoted product translation and reached cooperation agreements with a number of enterprises. In 2012 and 2015, he served as an external expert of Center for Drug Evaluation to evaluate new drugs. He has achieved many awards, such as Young Academic Leaders of Jiangsu Blue Project (2011), and Outstanding Contributions of the Middle-Aged and Young Experts of Nanjing (2019).
Guo-guang Chen, professor and doctoral supervisor, is a member of the eleventh Pharmacopoeia Commission of the People's Republic of China, expert of the fourth round of discipline evaluation for Academic Degrees and Graduate Education Development Center, Ministry of Education, and a member of the Pharmaceutical Analysis Informatics Committee of China Medical Informatics. His research mainly focuses on new pharmaceutical preparations and new preparation technology, pharmaceutical excipients and packaging materials, separation and purification of effective components of traditional Chinese medicine, new drugs for children and functional food. In recent years. He has presided over or participated in a number of national and provincial projects, including 5 major national science and technology projects, and 2 national 863 projects, published nearly 100 papers, and participated in the development and research of 12 new drugs. His research and applied patents after promotion have gained significant social and economic benefits.
Dingqiang Lu, professor and doctoral supervisor, is the executive director of Jiangsu New Drug Research and Development Association, expert of new drug evaluation in Jiangsu Province, Jiangsu Province Science and Technology Achievements Transformation Evaluation, and national science and technology award expert database. His research mainly focuses on biocatalysis, pharmaceutical engineering, and New drug research and development. Major courses he undertakes for undergraduates is Pharmaceutical Technology, and New Drug Research and Development Frontier Lecture for postgraduates. The project "Professional Degree Construction and Teaching Practice in Pharmaceutical Engineering" won the second prize of Shanghai higher education teaching achievement.
Bingfang He, professor and doctoral supervisor, focuses her research on molecular biology, enzyme engineering, including the discovery and application of novel enzymes and their further modification, the catalytic mechanism and regulation of enzymes, and the design and preparation of high-efficiency enzymes in bio-pharmaceuticals. She has won a number of titles and prizes, such as the title of "Famous Teaching Teacher" of Nanjing University of Technology, the title of "Top Ten Models of Teacher Morality" twice in 2006 and 2008, the special prize for teaching achievements of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government, the "Outstanding Communist Party Member of Jiangsu Province Colleges and Universities", the second prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award, the title of "College Students' Favorite Teacher" in Jiangsu Province, and the title of "Jiangsu Province Education Technology System May 1st Women's Model".
