Alessandro Sepe
Big Data Science Center at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility
Biography
Since 2018, Prof. Alessandro Sepe is Full Professor of Big Data. Science, Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things applied to Multidisciplinary Science at Large National Synchrotron Facilities, as well as Head of the Big Data Science Center at the Shanghai Synchrotron Radiation Facility (SSRF), Zhangjiang Lab, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
In 2012, he obtained his PhD in Physics at the Univeristy of Munich (TUM) in Germany. Subsequently he was a Research Associate at the University of Cambridge, UK, for more than 2 years, focusing on synchrotron and material science. As Group Leader, he then moved to the Adolphe Merkle Institute at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, where for 4 years he extended his research interests to the fields of high‐performance computing (HPC) and Big Data science applied to large scientific facilities, as well as leading a Swiss National Synchrotron Big Data initiative.
He is now establishing a wide international scientific network at SSRF, heading the deployment of a novel Big Data Science Infrastructure at the SSRF where Artificial Intelligence (A.I.), Real‐time Robotic remote experiments, Internet of Things, and HPC Cloud Supercomputing converge to create the first‐ever World‐Class User‐Friendly Chinese Superfacility, aiming at supporting all the key scientific national needs, and where also non‐experts can obtain scientifically meaningful results in real‐time. This will effectively extend the use of synchrotron facilities to the largest plethora of scientific disciplines ever, thus dramatically increasing the scientific outcome of Large Facilities like SSRF.
The ultimate goal of the Big Data Science Center (BDSC) at SSRF, led by Prof. Sepe, is providing a dramatic acceleration, in terms of scientific discoveries and technological advancements, to the Multidisciplinary Science carried‐out by users at SSRF, employing the state‐of‐the‐art Big Data Sciences and Technologies.
Prof. Sepe is author of several high‐impact peer‐reviewed international scientific articles, published, among many others, also on Nature, and his impacting scientific achievements have been reported in International Highlights, Press News and National TV documentaries. He is also very active in educating the new generations of scientists to the use of the most advanced data technologies applied to the interpretation of the complex synchrotron science. He is in fact the organizer of several International Conferences and International Schools within the field of Big Data and Synchrotron Science, where he is also giving University Lectures Series.
Prof. Sepe is an invited member at the executive panels of several top Synchrotorns worldwide, and of several international scientific associations, like the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr). He is also serving as invited reviewer for the most prestigious scientific journals, including Nature, the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), among many others.
