Abstract
Electrospray is an emerging technique widely used in analytical chemistry and advanced materials processing. Electrospray can atomize liquids into quasi-monodisperse droplets in a wide size range (from micrometers to essentially ions). One main drawback of the electrospray is the low flow rate emitted by each source. Our group overcame this obstacle through multiplexing the number of electrospray sources by 1000 times and potentially more. The scalability we demonstrated enables industrial scale of materials processing. In this seminar, I will first discuss the wide range of materials that can be processed by electrospray, such as the polymer derived ceramics for sensors in harshenvironments and fluorine polymers aimed for conformal coating of microscopic surface textures that reducehydrodynamic drag. I will also report our recent finding on using electrospray to fabricate organic solar cells. We generated semi-organized poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) nano pillars that may lead to superior charge mobility and better solar cell performance. In contrast to spin coating, the electrospray technique is compatible with roll-to-rollprocess and may eventually lead to low cost manufacturing of large format organic electronics.
