Recent Progress in Metal-catalyzed Carbon-Carbon Bond Forming Reactions

报告摘要：

The development of metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions over the past 30 years has revolutionized the way of carbon-carbon bonds forming between sp²and sp²carbon atoms. These methods have profoundly changed the protocols for the construction of natural products, building blocks for supramolecular chemistry and self-assembly chemistry, organic materials and polymersand lead compounds in medicinal chemistry from simpler entities. The 2010 Nobel prize in chemistry was awarded to E. Negishi, R. Heckand A. Suzuki for their contributions on the direct bond formation between carbon atoms via cross-coupling reactions.

The recent progress in metal-catalyzed carbon-carbon bond forming reactions will be discussed in this talk. In terms of sustainable chemistry, our lab focused on the development of novel cross-coupling reactions catalyzed bylow-cost and abundant metal in nature. We aimed to apply this direct strategy to synthesize natural products and various functional molecules.

报告人简介：

Professor Henry N.C. Wong is currently Head of New Asia College, Dean of Science and Professor of Chemistry. He obtained his B.Sc. degree with first class honors from CUHK in 1973 and was subsequently awarded a Shell Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies in the United Kingdom. He furthered his studies at University College London where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1976. After two postdoctoral research years at Harvard University, Professor Wong returned to University College London to begin his independent research undertaking as Ramsay Memorial Fellow. From 1980 to 1982, Professor Wong did research at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry, The Chinese Academy of Sciences. He returned to CUHK in 1983 and was the Chairman of the Department of Chemistry from 1995 to 1997 and the Senate Committee on Student Discipline from 1997 to 2002. Professor Wong was Head of New Asia College of CUHK from 2002 to July 2010 and was Pro-Vice-Chancellor/Vice-President from 2009 to 2013. He was a Croucher Senior Research Fellow in 1999-2000 and was elected to The Chinese Academy of Sciences, The World Academy of Sciences for the Advancement of Science in Developing Countries (TWAS) (formerly known as The Third World Academy of Sciences)and The Academy of Sciences of Hong Kong in 1999, 2004 and 2015 respectively.
