In the afternoon of Sept 10th, Nanjing Tech University (NanjingTech) held the opening ceremony for the freshmen of the 2+2 Program between NanjingTech and the University of Queensland (UQ). Prof. NIU (Vice President of NanjingTech) and Prof. LI (Deputy Vice-Chancellor of UQ) both delivered speeches to the freshmen of 2019. Representatives from other relevant departments also attended the ceremony.
Prof. NIU congratulated the new students. He said it is an important step for NanjingTech to cooperate with UQ through this program. He hopes that all the students will make full use of the educational resources and cherish the opportunity to study hard, for the good of themselves and their motherland.
Prof. LI welcomed new students of 2019 and congratulated them on being admitted by the 2+2 Program. He said UQ has more than 53,000 students, among which about 18,000 are international students from over 150 countries. UQ values its cooperation with NanjingTech. He hopes that the students will “stay feet, work hard and enjoy life” in the future.
Associate Prof. Mei (Vice Dean of College of Electrical Engineering and Control Science) said in her speech that “time is the most valuable thing and it is my hope that all of you will cherish time, study hard and read more books”.
Prof. Aleksandar Rakic from UQ also made a brief yet enthusiastic address to the freshmen. He encourages them to improve English language proficiency as much as they can, so that they will fit in easily and beautifully when they go to UQ two years later.
ZHANG Tiancheng, one of the new students, gave a speech on the ceremony on behalf of the freshmen. He appreciated the opportunity offered by the 2+2 Program because he and his classmates will have access to the excellent resources of both universities. All the students will study hard and become talents with cross-cultural communication skills and global vision so that they can contribute more to the cooperation and exchanges between the two nations.
In closing, UQ staff gave out the university badge and gifts to the students and took a group photo with them.

The University of Queensland is a comprehensive university with a history of over 100 years. It is also one of the largest and most well-known universities and a member of “Group of Eight” in Australia. It boosts two Nobel Prize winners, namely Peter C. Doherty in Physiology or Medicine in 1996 and Barry James Marshall in Physiology or Medicine in 2005. Besides, former Prime Minister of Australia Kevin Rudd and the first female Governor-General of Australia Dame Quentin Bryce are also alumni of UQ.
