Safety Science and Engineering
(Discipline Code: 0837)
I. Discipline Overview
Safety Science and Engineering is a general term for the disciplines, specialties and categories that combine the basic theory of safety science with safety engineering technology, management and practice. The main discipline directions include: safety science which reveals the objective laws of safety and provides discipline theory, application theory and professional theory; safety technology which ensures that people's lives and health are protected and their bodies and equipment and properties are not damaged in production and life, and provides direct and indirect protection; safety systems engineering which comprehensively uses the knowledge of systems theory, operations research, probability theory, decision theory, mathematical statistics, cybernetics and safety science theory to research the analysis, planning, design, organization, management, evaluation and control of safety systems; and safety and emergency management which is the process of organizing and using various resources such as human resources, material resources, financial resources and environment for realizing safety.
Safety Science and Engineering of Nanjing Tech University is a discipline that studies safety technology and management in modern urban and industrial production, especially in the production of chemical and petrochemical industries, and it is an emerging comprehensive discipline arising from the intersection of multiple disciplines. The discipline is based on the basic theoretical and technical knowledge of engineering mathematics, mechanics, physics, chemistry, combustion science, explosion science, heat and mass transfer, similar theory and simulation methods, and principles of safety science, etc. related to safety science and technology. The discipline focuses on the field of production safety and public safety, with major crossing areas covering public safety, industrial safety, fire safety, civil engineering safety, urban safety and other industries, and even various areas of human life.
II. Cultivation Goals

VI. Compulsory Links Management
1. Academic lectures/reports (2 credits)
Academic master students must attend at least fifteen academic seminars on and off campus during their studies, including at least five academic seminars arranged by the Graduate School and at least two lectures on the quality of humanities and aesthetics, and other lectures arranged by each college, and only those who have attended at least fifteen seminars can obtain the two credits for lectures/reports.
2. Academic Practice (2 credits)
During the study period, academic master students must participate in one of the following academic practice activities: graduate student science and technology forum, graduate student summer school, graduate student academic innovation forum, graduate student research innovation practice competition, high-level international and domestic academic conferences or overseas exchange visits, and labor practice, and participate in activities such as sunshine run on campus and sports meeting, in order to obtain 2 credits for academic practice.
VII. Thesis
1. Basic requirements for thesis
The thesis must be completed independently under the supervision of the supervisor, and should have new insights on the subject under study or innovation, showing that the author has the ability to engage in scientific research or to take up technical and management work independently. The actual work on the thesis usually lasts for not less than one year.
The thesis should have a correct topic, a feasible proposal, novelty, close connection between theory and practice, reliable data, rigorous analysis, conclusive arguments, and show the student's ability to independently analyze and solve problems. The thesis should present smooth written expressions, rigorous structures and strong logic. Its conclusions should be of important reference value and guiding significance.
2. Thesis proposal
The topic chosen for a graduate student's thesis should be approved by the tutor. After admission, graduate students determine their research direction under the guidance of their supervisors; grasp the previous research results, the current situation and development dynamics at home and abroad in this discipline by means of reviewing literature, materials, investigation and research, and determine specific research topics on this basis.
In principle, the time for graduate students to write the proposal report is determined by the institute according to the actual situation after the completion of the main courses specified in the cultivation plan. After the time for the proposal report is determined by the Institute, it must be submitted to the College for record.
The number of the proposal report should be about 5000 words; more than 80 main references should be read, among which foreign references should account for more than one-third.
The requirements on the proposal report are detailed in the "Requirements of Nanjing Tech University on the Proposal Report of Graduate Students" (Nan Gong (2014) Yan Zi No. 17).
3. Mid-term assessment
The mid-term examination of the thesis is required to be completed in the fourth semester after admission.
The mid-term examination of the thesis is divided into two parts: the individual writing of the Mid-term Assessment Form for Master Students and the mid-term assessment and defense meeting. The specific requirements for the mid-term examination are detailed in the Implementation Rules for Mid-term Assessment of Master Students in the College of Safety Science and Engineering.
4. Thesis review and defense
Academic master students can apply for defense after completing all the links and credits stipulated in the cultivation plan. Specific requirements for thesis review and defense are detailed in the Detailed Rules for the Master's Thesis Defense and Review and Degree Application of Nanjing Tech University.
5. Academic achievement requirements
All academic theses, except for the superb journals recognized by the university, should take Nanjing Tech University as the first signatory. Nanjing Tech University should be the first signatory of invention patents, scientific research awards, and other achievements. The scientific research results used to apply for the master's degree must be signed by the supervisor. During the study period, master students should publish a certain number of academic achievements such as academic papers related to the thesis, and the specific requirements are listed in the Measures for Assessment of Scientific Research Achievements of Master's Degree Applicants of Nanjing Tech University.
VIII. Criteria for Graduation and Degree Awarding
The criteria for graduation and degree awarding shall conform with the relevant regulations of the university.
