Foreign Languages and Literatures

I. Discipline Overview
Foreign Languages and Literatures belongs to the discipline of Humanities and Social Sciences, which is a first-level discipline under the literature discipline and includes five major fields of study: foreign language studies, foreign literature studies, translation studies, country and regional studies, and comparative literature and intercultural studies. The enrollment, cultivation and degree awarding of master students in the College of Foreign Studies of Nanjing Tech University focus on the research directions of foreign linguistics and applied linguistics, foreign literature and translation studies.
The study of foreign languages belongs to the category of linguistics, and is a comprehensive discipline that studies foreign languages and their use. It researches the nature, form, meaning, construction, function, variation, evolution, acquisition, and output of such languages. The scope of applied linguistics research includes the teaching, use, planning and policy of foreign languages, foreign language proficiency assessment, bilingual and multilingual phenomena, the relationship between language and literature, ethnicity, society and culture, the relationship between speech and human thought, psychology and behavior, the processing and synthesis of speech products (including machine translation), lexicography, etc. The study of foreign literature belongs to the category of literary studies, and research objects include the works of foreign authors, the history of foreign literature, foreign literary trends and genres, foreign literary theory and criticism, and comparative literary studies. In recent years, the study of foreign literature has newly expanded in both breadth and depth. Its interdisciplinary character has become increasingly evident, and its links to the development of Chinese literary studies and cultural studies and international communication have become closer. Foreign literature plays an active role in conducting cultural heritage and dissemination, strengthening understanding and communication among people from all over the world, and promoting the development of literature in China. In the field of translation studies, by drawing on the theories of linguistics, comparative literature, cross-cultural communication, etc., it studies the activities of interpretation and translation and their laws, the laws of cross-linguistic, cross-national and cross-border dissemination, reception and communication of literature and culture and related theoretical issues, including translation theory, translation history, translation criticism, translation teaching research, interpretation and translation research, machine-assisted translation research, etc.
II. Cultivation Goals
Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the discipline comprehensively implements the CPC's education policy, takes establishing moral values and educating people as the fundamental, and the all-round moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic development as the main line, aiming to cultivate high-level innovative, compound and international foreign-language talents with firm political stance, noble ideological character, and rigorous academic attitude.
Knowledge structure:Acquire basic knowledge, main theories and systematic expertise in a research direction of the discipline; understand the current research status and development trend of a research direction; have the ability to study, analyze and review previous research results; be good at identifying valuable scientific problems and solving them through rigorous logical reasoning and clear language expression; master skills and methods necessary for conducting research in the discipline and learn to use relevant research tools.Ability structure:Have good practical application skills in foreign languages, including general communication skills, teaching skills and intercultural communication skills; be able to use a second foreign language to read general textual materials and foreign language materials in students' own fields; have the ability to conduct independent investigation and research and apply professional knowledge to solve practical problems; respect others' academic ideas, research methods and achievements; have a sense of innovation and spirit of cooperation; be good at coordinating and communicating with others and have communication skills; and be competent in teaching, research, translation and cultural exchange in related fields after graduation.Quality structure:Have a correct outlook on life and values, systematically scientific and cultural knowledge and skills, robust physique and strong willpower, noble sentiments and correct aesthetics, correct labor concepts and good labor habits.
III. Cultivation Direction
The cultivation directions of the master points for the first-level degree in foreign languages and literature are:
1. Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics: Foreign Linguistics studies the nature, structural features, and developmental law of languages; Applied Linguistics studies the teaching, use, planning, and policy of languages; language proficiency assessment; bilingual and multilingual phenomena, the relationship between languages and literature, ethnicity, society, and culture; and the relationship between speech and human thought, psychology, and behavior.
2. Foreign Literature: The study of foreign literature includes the works of foreign authors, the history of foreign literature, foreign literary trends and genres, foreign literary theory and criticism, and country-specific literary studies.
3. Translation Studies: The study of translation involves comparative literature, linguistics, cross-cultural communication, cultural studies, philosophy, etc. Main contents include translation theory, translation history, translation policy, applied translation, translation criticism, machine-assisted translation studies, etc.
IV. Study Period and Credits
The length of schooling for full-time academic master students is 3 years, with a maximum of 5 years in principle.
The minimum total credits required for academic degree master students is 28 credits, including 24 credits for courses (3 credits for public degree courses, 13 credits for professional degree courses, 4 credits for professional elective courses and 4 credits for public elective courses), 2 credits for attending academic lectures/reports (at least 15 times) and 2 credits for academic practice.
For master students enrolled at the university with equivalent academic attainments or from another discipline, they must make up the main courses (not less than 2) of the undergraduate program of their current discipline, and the make-up courses will only be recorded with grades, not credits, but should be included in their personal cultivation plan.
In principle, the study of master's degree courses is completed within 1 year.

VI. Compulsory Links Management
1. Academic lectures/reports (2 credits)
Academic degree master students must attend at least fifteen academic seminars on and off campus during their study period, including at least five academic seminars arranged by the Graduate School, at least two lectures on the quality of humanities and aesthetics, and other lectures arranged by each college, and only those who have attended a total of at least fifteen seminars can obtain 2 credits for lectures/reports.
2. Academic practice (2 credits)
During the study period, academic degree master students must participate in one of the following academic practice activities: graduate student science and technology forum, graduate student summer school, graduate student academic innovation forum, graduate student research innovation practice competition, high-level international and domestic academic conferences or overseas exchange visits, labor practice, and participate in extracurricular activities such as sunshine run on campus and sports meeting, in order to obtain 2 credits for academic practice.
VII. Thesis
1. Basic requirements for thesis
The master's thesis in this discipline should be completed independently by master students under the guidance of the supervisor. In general, the master's thesis should be prepared in a foreign language with at least 15,000 words in foreign languages and 30,000 characters in Chinese. Master students in this discipline should spend at least one year to write the thesis and participate in the research related to the thesis. The topic should have some theoretical value and practical significance, and students should show their own opinions in the thesis. The thesis should have a clear explanation of core academic concepts; a rigorous research design, appropriate and effective methodology; arguments supported by relevant academic theories; authentic and reliable data; adequate and consistent argumentation; objective literature review, accurate citation, and standardized format of reference entry.
2. Thesis proposal
According to the "Requirements of Nanjing Tech University on the Thesis Proposal of Graduate Students", graduate students should generally write a proposal at the end of the third semester or the beginning of the fourth semester. The proposal should be at least 4,000words (foreign language words) long; there should be at least 40 references, with at least two-thirds of them being foreign papers; the selected topic should have some theoretical value or practical value in a specific field of the discipline. The proposal should include: (1) the research significance of the topic, the current situation at home and abroad; (2) the accumulation of work related to the topic and existing research achievements; (3) the difficulties in the topic and key problems to be solved; proposed research methods, technical routes, experimental programs and their feasibility; (4) planned progress and expected results.
3. Thesis review and defense
Academic master students can apply for defense after completing all the links and credits stipulated in the cultivation plan. Specific requirements for thesis review and defense are detailed in the Detailed Rules for the Master's Thesis Defense and Review and Degree Application of Nanjing Tech University.
4. Academic achievement requirements
The requirements for academic master students' academic achievements are detailed in the Measures for Assessment of Scientific Research Achievements of Master's Degree Applicants of Nanjing Tech University.
VIII. Criteria for Graduation and Degree Awarding
The criteria for graduation and degree awarding shall conform with the relevant regulations of the university.
