College of Mechanical and Power Engineering

College of Mechanical and Power Engineering originated from the major of Chemical Machinery that was founded in Nanjing Engineering College in 1956. Department of Chemical Machinery was founded in Nanjing Chemical Engineering College in 1958, and the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering was founded in Nanjing Architectural Engineering College in 1980, which merged as College of Mechanical and Power Engineering in 2001.Presently, the college has 1 First-LevelDiscipline with the Qualification for Granting Doctoral Degree(i.e. Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics), 1Postdoctoral Research Mobile Station (i.e.Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics), 1First-Level Discipline with the Qualification for Granting Master Degree (i.e. Mechanical Engineering), 5undergraduate majors (i.e. Process Equipment and Control Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Vehicle Engineering, New Energy Science and Engineering, and Welding Technology and Engineering), and 2 Institutes, 5 Departments, 2 Centers and 1 Teaching and Research Office (e.g. Chemical Machinery Research Institute and Chemical Equipment Design Institute). As one the four earliest postgraduate programs in Chemical Process Machinery in China, the college started to recruit postgraduate students in Chemical Process Machinery in 1978. In 1984, the college became one of the three earliest units withthe Qualification for Granting Doctoral Degree inChemical Process Machinery in China approved by Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. As major supporting disciplines of Engineering Science at Nanjing Tech University, Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics and Mechanical Engineering rank top 2.4 ‰ inESI (Essential Science Indicators) Rankings.Public Safety and Energy-Saving Project in which Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics participates is listed in Jiangsu Province Dominant Disciplines Phase-I Projects (rated as A in the final assessment), Advanced Energy Technology and Equipment in which Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics and Mechanical Engineering play a leading role is listed in Jiangsu Province Dominant Disciplines Phase-II Projects(passing thefinal assessment with remarkable achievements), and the discipline of Power Engineering and Engineering Thermal Physics is listed in Jiangsu Province Dominant Disciplines Phase-III Projects. Process Equipment and Control Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are listed in National First-Class Undergraduate Major Construction Sites, and Process Equipment and Control Engineering is approved by NationalEngineering Education Professional Certification for two successive years. Besides, thecollege owns 2 Jiangsu Province Experiment Teaching Demonstration Centers, i.e. Mechanical and Power Engineering Experiment Teaching Demonstration Center and Modern Equipment Manufacturing Engineering Training and Demonstration Center for College Students.

The college enjoys a long history. In more than 60 years since its establishment, the college has cultivated numerous outstanding discipline leaders. Professor Dai Shuhe is one of the founders of the discipline of Chemical Process Machinery in China. Professor Zhuang Jun is the pioneer and founder of the development and application of Heat Pipe Technology in China. Professor Tu Shandong, discipline leader of Chemical Process Machinery, is the first national high-level talent (distinguished professor) in the research field of Chemical Process Machinery. The college possesses a high-level teaching team. Now there are 92 full-time teachers, including 28 with senior professional titles, 36 with deputy senior professional titles and 28 with intermediate professional titles. 90% of teachers hold doctoral degrees. In the teaching team, there are dozens of outstanding talents, i.e. 2 academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, 2 listed in National High-Level Talent Program, 2 enjoying“Special Allowance for National Experts of the State Council”, 1 listed in Distinguished Professors in Jiangsu Province, 5 listed inAcademic Leading Talentsof Young Teachers Training Project in Jiangsu Province, 10 listed in Jiangsu Province “333 High-Level Talent Training Project” (1 in Level 1, 1 in Level-2 and 8 in Level-3), and 26 listed in Jiangsu Province “Six Talent Peaks”. “Industrial Energy-Saving Equipment & Technology” Innovation Team is listed in Excellent Scientific and Technological Innovation Team ofYoung Teachers Training Project in Jiangsu Province, and Process EquipmentAdvanced Design & Manufacturing Teaching Team is listed in National Petroleum and Chemical Education Excellent Teaching Team and Excellent Teaching Team ofYoung Teachers Training Project in Jiangsu Province.

In the construction of disciplines, the college highlights national major strategic demand, industrial-technological innovation and regional economic development, forges characteristic disciplines (e.g. Advanced Design and Manufacturing of Extreme Pressure-Bearing Equipment, Process Strengthening and High-Efficiency Energy-Saving Technology, Safety Theory and Risk Assessment Technology of Major Equipment and Digital Manufacturing Technology of Advanced Equipment), and establishes 12 scientific research & innovation teams (e.g. Process Strengthening and High-Efficiency Process Equipment and Advanced Equipment Manufacturing).The college has 7 national and provincial & ministerial research bases, i.e. National Heat Pipe Technology Promotion Center, Jiangsu Province Key Laboratory of Process Strengthening and New Energy Equipment Technology, Jiangsu Province Key Laboratory of Digital Manufacturing and Control Technology of Industrial Equipment, Jiangsu Province Laboratory of Energy Saving and Environmental Protection Technology & Equipment Engineering of Process Industry, Jiangsu Province Key Laboratory ofExtreme Pressure-Bearing EquipmentDesign and Manufacturing, Sinopec (Nanjing) Equipment Failure Mechanism and Analysis and Prevention Research Center, and Sinopec Engineering Risk Analysis Technology Research Center. The college enjoys a wide reputation in the world in the research on Structural Integrity and Life Evaluation Technology ofPressure-Bearing Equipment. It has made remarkable achievements in Time-Related Design and Re-design Theory and Damage and Failure of High-Temperature Equipment, and successively won 3 Second Prizes ofState Scientific and Technological Progress Award. It has played a pioneering role in the research on the reliability of chemical engineering equipment in China and proposed the discipline system of Risk Engineering. It owns Sinopec’s only research center that specializes in Engineering Risk Analysis, which makes important contributions to ensuring the long-term safe operation of large-scale petrochemical plants and has won three national scientific and technological awards successively. Since the 1970s, the college has been engaged in the research and development of high-efficiency heat and mass transfer equipment characterized by heat pipe technology, and thermal pipe (heat pipe) technology has been successfully applied in Qinghai-Tibet Railway Frozen Soil Reinforcement Project. In recent years, the college has formed characteristic development in the R & D and engineering of high-efficiency compact heat exchangers. In particular, heat pipe heat exchanger and compact heat exchanger that the college develops have been applied in more than 200 large petrochemical and metallurgical enterprises in China, and rewarded 6 National Scientific and Technological Awards like The Second Prize of National Technological Invention Award, The Second Prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award, National Innovation Competition Award, andHo Leung Ho Lee Foundation Award for Scientific and Technological Innovation. The college has successfully developed the first gasket comprehensive performance testing machine in China, which establishes the foundation for static seal testing standards and transforms the long-term dependence on the import of high parameter sealing elements in China. With significant achievements in industry-university-research, the college has maintained long-term cooperative relations with super-large corporations and institutes like Sinopec,China National Petroleum Corporation,China National Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd., China Association of Special Equipment Inspection, Shagang Group and Nanjing Iron & Steel United Co., Ltd.

With more than 2,200 students at various levels, the college attaches great importance to the cultivation of high-quality talents. Since its establishment, the college has cultivated more than 10,000 undergraduates, postgraduate and doctoral students in China. Outstanding alumni are Fang Daining, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Qian Feng, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering; and Tu Shandong, academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. Graduates play an active role in enterprises and institutions, governmental organizations, and scientific research institutes in colleges and universities in the fields of chemical industry, petrochemical industry, energy, special equipment and equipment manufacturing, and make tremendous contributions to China’s educational, scientific and technological undertakings as well as national economic construction. In line withnational major demandand local economic & social development, the college strengthens the idea of “green, safety, environmental protection and energy-saving” in Process Equipment Design and Manufacturing, and cultivates innovative talents.
