Historical Evolution
College of Economics and Management dates back to Humanities Teaching and Research Office that took shape in 1958, when Nanjing Chemical Engineering College became an independently university. In 1979, it started to recruit students of Economics and Management. In 1980, it established the Department of Humanities and Economics and Management accordingly. In January 1999, it organized the College of Economics and Management of Nanjing Chemical Engineering University. In 2001, Nanjing Chemical Engineering University merged with Nanjing Architecture and Engineering College, after which Nanjing Tech University took shape. College of Economics and Management and College of Management Science and Engineering were established. In August 2010, relevant disciplines of College of Economics and Management and College of Management Science and Engineering merged as College of Economics and Management. In May 2015, Nanjing Tech University implemented a College-Department System and newly organized College of Economics and Management.
Overview of Disciplines
Presently, the college owns 3First-Level Disciplines with the Qualification for Granting Master Degree (i.e. Business Administration, Management Science and Engineering and Library Information and Archives Management), 6 Majors with the Qualification for Granting Master Degree (i.e. Management Science and Engineering, Enterprise Management, Technology Economics and Management,Accounting, Intellectual Property and Scientific and Technological Innovation Management, and Information Service and Innovation Management),6 Majors or Fields with the Qualification for Granting Professional Master Degree (i.e. Industrial Engineering,Project Management, Logistics Engineering, MBA, MEM and MPAcc), and 12 Undergraduate Majors (i.e. Business Administration, International Economics and Trade, Finance, Marketing,Accounting, Human Resources Management, Information Management and Information System, Electronic Business, Industrial Engineering, Engineering Management, Intellectual Property, and Real Estate Development and Management). Based on the dominant discipline group of Nanjing Tech University, the college clarifies strategic direction, advances the differentiated development of disciplines, and centers on the development of three fields, i.e. “Scientific and Technological Innovation”, “Intellectual Property” and “Low-Carbon Economy”.
Talent Cultivation
Now, College of Economics and Management has more than 3,000 undergraduates and postgraduates. In talent cultivation, the college aims to cultivate students as talents with a global vision and comprehensive capacity in management, entrepreneurial & teamwork spirit, innovation, right self-identification and social-role consciousness. In talent training, teachers in the college attach importance to the improvement of students’ overall qualities and the cultivation of healthy personalities, and strive to forge senior professionals in economic management with the characteristics of Nanjing Tech University.Simultaneously, teachers emphasize the cultivation of students’ practical and innovative abilities, and win awards in various national competitions. Among college graduates (undergraduates and postgraduates), some continue to study in well-known universities at home and abroad, some play a part in important posts in government organs or famous enterprises, some start their own businesses and become entrepreneurs, and some become scholars in the educational field.
Scientific Research Service
National Intellectual Property Talent Training (Jiangsu) Base and China National Intellectual Property Administration Patent Agent Teaching and Research (Jiangsu) Center under the leadership of China National Intellectual Property Administration at Nanjing Tech University, as well as Jiangsu Association for Science and Technology Innovation, Zijin Science and Technology Call Center and Scientific and Technological Innovation Think Tank under the leadership of Department of Science and Technology of Jiangsu Province at Nanjing Tech University, are all established at College of Economics and Management. The college possesses research organizations like Technological Innovation and Industry-University-Research Cooperation Research Center, Regional Intellectual Property Strategy Research Institute, Jiangsu Province Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Research Institute, Finance Research Institute, Industrial Economics Research Institute, Institutional Economics Research Institute, Technology Economics Research Institute, Modern Business Administration Research Institute, Sustainable Production and Consumption Research Institute, and Management Information System Research Institute. The college has jointly built the research and innovation center, teaching and practice base and graduate workstation with Nanjing Luculent Software Co., Ltd., Jiangsu Tiandilong Group Co., Ltd and other enterprises. Besides, the college actively boosts foreign exchanges, and supports study abroad and talent introduction programs. It has established cooperative relations in academic exchanges, talent training and teacher training with Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rennes School of Business (France), State University of New York, The University of South Wales (the UK), Massey University (New Zealand), Leipzig University of Technology (Germany) and Aichi Institute of Technology (Japan).
In the past five years, the college has obtained more than 30 national funded projects, as well as around 100 provincial & ministerial projects and other projects, with the number of horizontal & vertical scientific research projects increasing year by year. Several significant research achievements have won provincial & ministerial awards. “Survey and Research on the Introduction of Overseas High-Level Talents in Jiangsu Province” hosted by Zhao Shunlong and Chen Tongyang is rewarded the First Prize of Jiangsu Federation of Philosophy and Social Sciences, and Wang Jining is rewarded the Second Prize of the 13th Jiangsu Province Philosophy and Social Sciences Outstanding Achievement Award in 2014. In recent years, teachers of the college have published more than 100 papers at authoritative journals at home and abroad, likeAbstract and Applied Analysis,Economic Research Journal,Journal of Management Sciences in China,Journal of Management World,Journal of Financial ResearchandSystems Engineering Theory & Practice. Dozens of academic papers have been collected by SCI, EI andXinhua Digest, and more than 30 monographs and textbooks have been published.
Teaching Staff Team
Now, the college has a teaching staff team that combines old, middle-aged and young teachers and embodies a reasonable professional structure. The full-time and part-time teachers have the high educational level. In particular, more than 50% teachers possess the titles of professor and associate professor. In full-time teachers, there are several discipline academic leaders with academic influence in several fields in Jiangsu Province and China, and many young and middle-aged academic backbone teachers with solid theoretical foundation, strong scientific research ability and great potential for development. In part-time teachers, there are famous entrepreneurs and young and middle-aged professors with considerable academic influence in China. The college provides opportunities for study abroad for 4-5 teachers every year.
Development Prospect
The discipline of Economics and Management is listed in Nanjing Tech University Key Construction Disciplines. Observing the times and judging the occasion, the college will firmly seize the development opportunity provided by Nanjing Tech University and society, implement the development idea of “One Center, Two Wings and Four Enhanced Aspects” (Discipline Construction as One Center, Student Cultivation and Teacher Team Construction as Two Wings, and Enhancing Academic Atmosphere, Cooperation & Communication, Team Construction and Incentive Mechanism), and define the development strategy, goal and orientation. It will establish and improve various rules and regulations, promote the rapid development of discipline construction and team construction, vigorously launch the construction of teaching staff, constantly strengthen the quality of student education and cultivation, further enlarge the channel of external development, and actively foster the continuous progress of scientific research. The college will center on discipline construction and planning and focus on “One Forum, Two Platforms and Three Growth Points” in the college work. One Forum refers to Young Teachers Academic Forum. Two Platforms refer to National Intellectual Property Talent Training (Jiangsu) Base and Jiangsu Association for Science and Technology Innovation. Three Growth Points refer to Discipline Growth Point (the core role), MBA Growth Point and Intellectual Property Growth Point. Based on the dominant disciplines of Nanjing Tech University, the college builds the discipline construction platform, makes a batch of characteristic high-level research achievements in discipline construction, cultivates a high-level and high-quality teaching team, improves the overall talent training level and enhances social popularity.
