College of Food Science and Light Industry

College makes full use of the advantages of our University in chemical engineering, including biochemical disciplines, develops food disciplines through disciplinary intersection and penetration, and has formed discipline directions with domestic and international influencebased on the characteristics of engineering disciplines. More than 50% of the current faculty members of the College have a background of studying abroad. The College has been optimizing the structure of the faculty by attracting and cultivating talents, and has gathered a number of scholars and young and middle-aged discipline leaders who are rigorous in their studies, have profound academic attainments, and have outstanding scientific achievements, including experts having received special allowances from the State Council and recipients of theNational Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

The College has a complete cultivation system from bachelor’s degree to post-doctoral degree. Now, the College has 1First-Level Disciplinewith the Qualification for Granting Doctoral Degree, 1First-Level Disciplinewith the Qualification for Granting Professional Master Degree(Food Science and Engineering), 1Full-time MasterDegree Programin Engineering(Light Industry Technology and Engineering), and 3Full-time Undergraduate Majors (Food Science and Engineering, Light Chemical Engineering, Food Quality and Safety). It has 1 Master Degree Program in the First-level Discipline of Food Science and Engineering (ranked in the top 30% of the country in 2019), which currently covers 3Second-Leveldisciplines of Food Science, Food Safety and Agricultural Products Processing and Storage Engineering, and among them,Food Science and Food Safety are important components of the advantageous and key disciplines in Jiangsu Province“Industrial Biotechnology and Pharmaceutical Manufacturing” and “Public Safety and Energy Conservation” respectively.

In terms of industry-university-research collaboration, the College has actively explored the mode of collaboration between majors and trades, industries and enterprises, and has formed research-led, enterprise-led and government-led talent cultivation methods. In recent years, the College has undertaken projects supported by the national “973” and “863” Programs, projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key Technology R&D Program, and provincial and ministerial research projects by relying on the NationalEngineeringResearch Center for Biotechnology, State Key Laboratory of Materials-Oriented Chemical Engineering, National Light Industry Food Quality Supervision and Inspection Nanjing Station, National Light Industry Fragrances, Cosmetics and Detergents Quality Supervision and Inspection Nanjing Station, and Jiangsu Public Technical Service Center for Rapid Food Safety Testing. Some of its research results in biopolymer materials, rapid food safety testing technology, biocatalysts, functional nutritional foods, fine chemicals and functional additives, ecological textiles and food additives are at the international advanced level and domestic leading level, with obvious disciplinary advantages and broad influence. It has successively won many national, provincial and ministerial awards, such as the Second Prize of NationalAward for Technology Invention, Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Award, the First Prize of Award for Science and Technology Invention of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, the First Prize of Award for Science and Technology Progressof China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, the First Prize of Award for Technology Invention of China National Light Industry Council, and the First Prize of Award for Excellent Scientific Research Achievements and Technology Inventions of Higher Education Institutions.

90% of the graduates are employed in economically developed regions such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Yangtze River Delta, and by national institutions such as Customs and Administration for Market Regulation, as well as domestic and foreign famous enterprises such as CP Group, COFCO, Unilever, Yili Dairy, Bank of China, Bank of Jiangsu, Bank of Nanjing, etc., with the employment rate reaching 100%. Among them, about 40% of the students continue to study for master’s degrees at the University of Sheffield, University of Southampton, University of Glasgow, University of Queensland, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Zhejiang University, China Agricultural University, University of International Business and Economics, and other well-known universities at home and abroad.

In the new historical period, the College will deeply study and implement Xi Jinping thought onsocialism with Chinese characteristicsfor anew era, firmly grasp the fundamental requirement of “establishing moral values and educating people”, focus on strengthening the internal construction, continue to develop the characteristic advantages of the disciplines, and cultivate qualified talents to meet the needs of society.
