The discipline of Civil Engineering originated from the Department of Mechanics of Tongji Medical and Engineering College, which was established in 1915.It established Tongji Advanced Industrial School in 1933, which was moved to Nanjing in 1951 and renamed Nanjing College of Architecture and Engineering in 1980.After it merged with the former Nanjing University of Chemical Technology to form Nanjing Tech Universityin 2001, the former Department of Civil Engineering was renamed as College of Civil Engineering.

At present, the College has more than 1,800 undergraduates and more than 700 full-time postgraduates on campus. Also, it has 103 faculty members, including 2 advisors and double-appointed academicians, 1 person selected in the National Talent Program, 3 persons selected in the National Youth Talent Program, 20 person times selected in the Talent Program of Jiangsu Province, 3 master teachers of civil engineering in Jiangsu Province, forming a faculty with a combination of elder, middle-aged and young people, high academic level, reasonable academic and knowledge structure.

The discipline of Civil Engineering was awarded the MasterDegreeProgramin Structural Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering in 1996; independently set up the Ph.DDegree Program in Civil Engineering Materials and Engineering in 2002; was awardedtheFirst-Level Disciplinewith the Qualification for Granting Master Degree (i.e.CivilEngineering), the Second-Level Discipline with the Qualification for Granting Doctoral Degree (i.e.GeotechnicalEngineering)in 2005; was awarded the MasterDegreeProgram for Professional Degreesin Construction and Civil Engineering (Civil Engineering and Water Conservancy) in 2009; was awarded the Postdoctoral Mobile Station in Civil Engineering in 2009; and was awarded the Ph.D Program for theFirst-Level DisciplineofCivil Engineering in 2010. The College has a large number of teaching and research platforms, such as Jiangsu Province Civil Engineering Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Jiangsu Laboratory of Green High-Performance Materials and Structures Engineering, Jiangsu Green Construction Engineering Technical Research Co., Ltd.,the Assembly Building Industry Base of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, CSCEC-NTU Smart Construction Research Center and Nanjing Jiangbei New Area Construction Research Institute.

The College comprehensively implements the education policy of the Communist Party of China, implements the fundamental task of establishing moral values and educating people, firmly adheres to the central position of teaching work, and focuses on constructing and continuously optimizing the talent cultivation system. The undergraduate major of civil engineering is among the first batch of featured majors in Jiangsu Province, the first batch of national experimental zones for innovation of talent cultivation mode, the first batch of national featured major construction sites, and the first batch of pilot majors of national excellent engineer education and cultivation program. In 2019,this major passed the fourth professional assessment unanimouslyand was selected as one of the first national first-class undergraduate major construction sites. In recent years, it has won many awards, including the First Prize and Second Prize of National Award for Higher Education and Teaching Achievements, the First Prize and Second Prize of Jiangsu Province Award for Higher Education and Teaching Achievements, and the Second Prize of Jiangsu Province Award for Graduate Education Reform Achievement. Now, there are two national planning textbooks, one national first-class undergraduate course, one national characteristic case library construction course, one teaching team of Jiangsu Qing Lan Project, and one excellent textbook for undergraduates and postgraduates each in Jiangsu Province. The College attaches great importance to international education cooperation, and has built a 3+1+1 program in the major of Civil Engineering with the University of Missouri in the U.S., a 3+1 cooperation program in the major of Civil Engineering with Technological University Dublin in Ireland with the approval of the Ministry of Education of China, and cooperated with the Chinese and Foreign Humanities Exchange Center of the Ministry of Education to establish the “Belt and Road”Institute of Chinese and Foreign Humanities Exchange in Chemical and Construction Industry. It offers 38 courses in English and has more than 90 international students from more than 10 countries.

The College insists on characteristic and differentiated comprehensive development, takes basic theory research as the pioneer, and closely integrates with national major construction projects, having achieved a series of innovative results, and formed characteristic directions such as new material structure and new structure, structural seismic resistance &mitigation and comprehensive protection, urban infrastructure resilience technology, and intelligent construction and management. In the past five years, the College has obtained more than 200 projects supported by various funds, including the key projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National Key Research and Development Program, with scientific research funding of more than 100 millionyuan;it has won many awards, including the Second Prize of National Award for Science and Technology Progress, the First Prize and Second Prize of the Award for Science and Technology of Jiangsu Province, the First Prize of Award for Science and Technology Progress of China Highway and Transportation Society, the First Prize of China Award for Industry-University-Research Cooperation Innovation Achievement, and the China Patent Award; and it has edited, as the chief editor, more than 30 national and provincial standards, such as the national full-text mandatory specification “General Specification for Wood Structures”, and participated in editing 15 important standards. The College strengthens the integration of university and enterprises, promotes in-depth cooperation between government, industry, university and research, attaches importance to the transformation of scientific research results, and carries out strategic cooperation with leading enterprises in the industry such as China State Construction and local governments such as the national Nanjing Jiangbei New Area, etc. The scientific and technological achievements have been applied in more than 100 major projects such as the terminal building of the new international airport in Kunming, the main wooden structure pavilion of the 10^thGarden Expo, the anti-ship collision study of Changzhou-Taixing Yangtze River Bridge, the smart operation and maintenance of Nanjing Museum, etc., and have positively contributed to the relevant industry, regional engineering construction and social development.

During its 100 years of operation, the College has sent more than 20,000 graduates to the society and produced a large number of outstanding alumni such as Zhou Naixiang, chairman of CSCEC, Wang Xiangming, chairman of China Resources Group, Chen Weiguo, general director for construction of Leishenshan Hospital and Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan, and chairman of China Construction Third Engineering Bureau Group Co., Ltd., Zhang Jiandong, a talent selected for the National Talent Program, etc., which has been generally welcomed and highly evaluated by all walks of life.
