College of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established in May 2008. The Pharmaceutical Sciences is an emerging discipline of Nanjing Tech University, and covers three levels of cultivation: undergraduate students, master students and doctoral students, including two undergraduate majors in pharmaceutical preparation and pharmaceutics; master’s degree programs in the first-level disciplines of pharmaceutical sciences (including pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacy, biopharmacy, pharmaceutical analysis, microbiology and biochemical pharmacy, pharmacology and other directions); and Ph.D programs in pharmaceutical engineering, biochemistry (biochemical drug direction). Now, the College has more than 670 undergraduates and more than 150 doctoral and master students.

Based in Jiangsu, a strong pharmaceutical province, relying on “The Synergetic Innovation Center for Advanced Materials” selected as one of the first batches of the national “Innovation Capacity Enhancement Program for Higher Education Institutions (2011 Program)”, the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences has formed characteristics and advantages in microorganisms and biochemical drugs, pharmacology and drug safety evaluation, new drug dosage forms and new technologies, research and isolation engineering of active ingredients of natural drugs, discovery and synthesis of innovative drugs for major diseases, etc. by focusing on the needs of national strategy and facing the major needs of the pharmaceutical industry and enterprises in Jiangsu. The existing high-level engineering technical centers and achievement transformation bases such as National Engineering Research Center for Biotechnology (direction of biochemical drugs), Jiangsu Industrial Biotechnology Innovation Center, Jiangsu Drug Safety Evaluation Center, which has passed the National GLP Certification, Jiangsu Technical Service Center for Research and Engineering of New Drug Formulations, and the Center for Pharmacokinetic and Pharmacodynamic Research and Evaluation, Nanjing Tech University have established broad cooperation with famous pharmaceutical enterprises including Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Yangtze River, Hengrui, Simcere, and jointly built a batch of pharmaceutical research & development centers, production and pilot research bases, providing excellent teaching and research base for the cultivation of pharmacy talents.

The College has a highly qualified academic research team and faculty with academician Ouyang Pingkai as the chief advisor of the discipline. There are 37 full-time teachers, and of whom, more than 95% have doctoral degrees and more than 50% have the background of overseas study. The College has gathered outstanding talents majored in pharmaceutical sciences from famous universities in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, etc., as well as recipients of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, talents selected as “333 High-Level Talents” of Jiangsu Province and “Six Talent Peaks Program” of Jiangsu Province, young and middle-aged academic leaders of Jiangsu Province “Qing Lan Project”, and other research and teaching backbones. In the past five years, the College has undertaken more than 20 national important research projects such as the National 973 Program, National 863 Program, National Science and Technology Major Project, National Support Program projects, and projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc., as well as more than 20 provincial and ministerial projects, and a large number of scientific research projects entrusted by enterprises. It has been successively awarded two second prizes of the National Award for Science and Technology Invention, one first prize of the Award for Technical Invention of the Ministry of Education, one Award for Innovation in Science and Technology of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation, one excellent prize of China Patent Award, three first prizes of the Award for Technical Invention of China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation, and many Provincial and Ministerial Awards for Science and Technology Progress.

Based on the high-end faculty, perfect teaching conditions and strong scientific research power, the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences focuses on the all-around development of students, emphasizes the concept of engineering, and strives to cultivate industrialized and inter-disciplinary talents suitable for the needs of enterprises. Over the years, the acceptance rate of undergraduates in graduate school is 30%, and their total employment rate is over 98%. They are employed in economically developed regions, including the Yangtze River Delta, Pearl River Delta, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, etc., and work for domestic and overseas well-known pharmaceutical companies, such as GlaxoSmithKline, Pfizer, Merck, AstraZeneca, and Simcere. The graduates of the College are widely praised in the pharmaceutical industry for their steady practice spirit, aggressive innovation consciousness, solid theoretical foundation and good experimental and practical ability. The College strengthens communication and cooperation with overseas universities, and has successively established cooperation with Purdue University, Michigan State University, Ohio State University, Washington State University, Ohio University, etc. to continuously improve education and teaching, strengthen the promotion of overseas advanced technology in China, aiming to cultivate “high-level, inter-disciplinary, international-vision” pharmaceutical professionals.

After the construction during the 13^thFive-Year Plan period, the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences has been constantly improved in terms of the teaching and research level, the quality of the faculty and the management ability, and has formed the initial features in the discipline construction and research team. Aiming at the frontier of international science and technology and the major needs of the country and Jiangsu Province, the College will combine the disciplines such as medicine, pharmaceutical sciences, biology and health sciences to develop the big health industry and expand new disciplines and fields while building the traditional pharmaceutical disciplines. It will insist on the industry-university-research combination, accelerate the industrialization of scientific and technological achievements, make the College of Pharmaceutical Sciences larger and stronger, and achieve the strategic goal of “being comprehensive, research-oriented, and globalized” by keeping a foothold in the university, facing the Jiangsu Province, and going to the world.
